Acoustical Wonder – The Katharas Studio
Delhi, the capital city known for its cultural heritage, houses an age old music academy by the name of Saraswati Music College, which was Established in the year 1924 by Shri Bansilal Kapoor, a disciple of the veteran musician Late Pandit Maniram of the Mewati Gharana. The institute has since been imparting training in the field of arts, music, and dance and has produced some of the most outstanding musicians of all times, such as, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj, Shri. O.P. Nayyar, Mohammad Rafi, and many more.
After Prof. Bansilal Kapoor, the legacy was continued by his daughter Smt.Usha Saini with support of her husband Shri Balram Saini. Under their vision, not only did the institute organize a number of cultural and star-studded events around the world, from live shows of Kishore Kumar to BoneyM, but also expanded its operations in the mid nineties from Darya Ganj to its new building in Safdarjung Enclave in south Delhi.
Their son Vibhor Saini, an ace musician himself, after starting to compose and teach both Indian and Western music by the age of 14, took over the operations of the academy in its new half an acre building complex with world class infrastructure and introduced streams of western music, music technology and music recording to the students of the academy.
In 2004, Vibhor was on a hunt of a studio to record his own guitar instrumental album “Singing Strings”. However, everything he came across in Delhi was not upto the mark, and nor was he satisfied with the outcome. As a result, he had to record the album in Mumbai. That’s when he decided that there should be a good studio in Delhi which can cater to the needs of upcoming artists. The Katharas Studios thus came into existence in 2007 after Vibhor, along with Mr. Satish Gupta, did a lot of research and planning of the acoustics, designing, and equipment to be installed at the studio and spent three years to get the studio up and running. Together Vibhor and Satish made several layouts & designs, and throughout the construction period kept testing acoustics to make the studio sound as good as it does today.
Mr. Satish Gupta is a senior sound engineer from Mumbai. Having worked at studios like the Yash Raj Studios, R.K.Studios, Western Outdoor and Krishna Studios with legends like Khayaam, Naushad, O.P. Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, S.D. Burman, R.D.Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Vasant Desai, Rajesh Raushan, Anu Malik and Mahesh Bhatt to name a few, he won 4 Zee Cine awards for Border, China Gate, Kachche Dhage, and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and 4 IIFA awards for Murder – Bheege honth tere, Border- Sandese aate hain, Kaho na pyaar hai & koi mil gaya for best sound recording. He also recorded Atif Aslam’s first bollywood song “Woh Lamhe” from Zehar, that made Atif Aslam a bollywood star overnight.
